Readers of a certain age may remember Tamagotchi – little electronic pets that pit in your pocket, occasionally beeping so you’d remember to feed them. They were a forerunner to the constant distraction machines that many of us have in our pockets today, and as such it’s a blast from the past to discover the Cyber Pet Tumbler, a modern implemantation of a pocket pet built on a Raspberry Pi Pico.

There’s a very pleasing trend of building AI assistants into repurposed hardware, and here’s a brilliant example of the genre – the oDuckberry AI assistant, stuffed into the shell of a novelty alarm clock. It runs on Raspberry Pi 4, has coloured LEDs to indicate the device’s status, and the duck’s beak move when it talks to you. Truly a work of genius!

Most readers who know anything about the history of computing will recognise the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum. But there’s another, more obscure, 8-bit computer that was available from 1984 to 1990: the Amstrad CPC. Maker Stéphane Plantard has re-created this lost bit of computing nostalgia using (among other things) a Raspberry Pi Pico and a beautiful custom PCB.
